Still unsure what you want to do with your life? Need clarity on how you can make a living while feeling fulfilled everyday?

Use the worksheet below to discover your IKIGAI (don't worry if this sounds alien to you - it’s all explained in the post) where your values, gifts, happiness, skills and passion all align and go BINGO!

We are each born with gifts, skills and talents which are unique to us. I believe we are meant to use all of these resources to do something which we love, contribute to the world, help others and to make a sustainable living while doing so.

Take a moment and let that possibility sink in. How awesome will that be? Wouldn’t this place be a happier place full of meaning and positivity?

There is a sweet spot where all these things overlap. And the Japanese has a really beaooootiful name for it. It’s called IKIGAI.

What gets you out of bed every day with a fire in your belly? What makes you want to jump out of bed? IKIGAI is a Japanese concept meaning "a reason for being",  very similar to the French phrase Raison d'être. Everyone, according to the Japanese, has an IKIGAI. Finding it requires a deep and often lengthy search of self.

You can also call it PURPOSE, MISSION, SWEET SPOT or even the G SPOT! Whatever spot works for you. 😉 - this spot is what you want to do with your life.

It’s the pretty intersection of:

What you’re good at.
What you love to do - your curiosities, interests, passion.
What the world needs.
What you can be paid for.

I get so excited just typing this out!

Your job is to figure out what can overlap, what is in the sweet spot for you. It’s different for each of us and it’s totally figureoutable!

To help you with this IKIGAI discovery exercise, I’ve created a free worksheet (omg, I love worksheets! Feels like school all over again!) which you can download, print out and get cracking on!

The overlap might not be immediately obvious to you. If the “sweet spot” doesn’t jump right out at you don’t worry. It doesn’t mean you don’t have one! You’ve got to use your creativity. Dig deeper and expand the confinements which you may have unconsciously placed upon yourself.

Here are a few prompts to help you sashay along.

  1. You may be tempted to make money using a skill you have which you may not entirely enjoy. Simply put, there may be things which you are good at, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be happy doing it. For example, I am good in maths, but I absolutely DETEST it! As much as I detest cockroaches. So you’ve got to drop that. No one wants cockroaches for a living.
  2. If you have a few “sweet spots” (lucky you!) and you cannot decide which to go for. Ask yourself – Will this be contributing to the world the way you want to? Will it actively change people’s lives? Will it give you the kind of income for the lifestyle you aspire to have?

All things being equal, if you have two sweet spots – one has the potential to make you more income than the other – then you have to be honest with your expectations. Are you willing to adjust your lifestyle to pursue Sweet Spot 1 (even if it means earning less) because it lights you up more than Sweet Spot 2, or the notion of eating cup noodles for the rest of your life just doesn’t cut it regardless of how much you love what you do, or how well you do it?

There is no right or wrong way to slice this. The only way is YOUR WAY, ok? And your way may be doing what you absolutely love for a level of lifestyle that is acceptable and right for you. Cos enough is plenty, right?

  3. Your Ikigai can change over time as you build clarity and develop self-awareness. Feel free to revisit this exercise whenever you feel a sense of misalignment between your values and what you do.
  4. Have you seen people who are doing the same things but some are glowing and some aren’t? Some imbue so much love and energy into what they do that the world can’t help but feel brighter.

For me, I swear I’m glowing like a megawatt lightbulb ?  as I am hammering on my keyboard working on this article. Start paying attention to moments where you are at your best and when you shine.

What are the times when you thrive and feel amazing? These are clues about what you should be doing with your life! The Universe is constantly giving us signs so be on the look out for them.

Good luck and let me know how you get on with the exercise!

I wish you clarity, light and a purpose-filled life.
